MBHB Favorably Ranked By Juristat Among Top 20 IP Law Firms In Four Key Metrics

McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP (“MBHB”) ranks among the top 20 intellectual property law firms across four key metrics within the USPTO’s Technology Centers (TC) 3600 and 3700, according to data published in 2017 by Juristat. These Technology Centers cover much of the e-commerce, software and electrical engineering tech sector. 

Much like the Juristat Top 100, this ranking is unique in that it considers both volume and performance. The ranking is based on four key metrics, as measured from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015, that includes:

• Number of Applications Filed
• Allowance Rate
• Average Number of Office Actions Before Allowance
• Average Time of Allowance

Eligibility & Methodology

According to Juristat, all metrics herein, apart from Applications Filed, are based on public applications disposed between January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015. Applications Filed is based on published applications filed during that time. Finally, to qualify for inclusion, a law firm must have filed a minimum of 200 applications during that time. For the purposes of this ranking, Juristat attributed applications to the firm listed on the application at the time of disposition. After the firms’ rankings were calculated for each of the criterion above, Juristat calculated an overall ranking by determining a weighted average of each firm’s four rankings. This method is but one way to measure a firm’s performance and is not intended to be definitive. There are many different areas in which a firm may excel, which this particular ranking may not encompass. Finally, it’s important to note that foreign priority applications were excluded in these metrics (which can significantly affect the filing totals).
