Major European counties will soon begin what are, perhaps, the most radical changes in the European patent system since at least the EPC. That is, the current system of national EP patents enforced in national courts will be replaced by a Unified Patent covering all participating countries and enforced in a Unified Patent Court system, whose decisions will be binding in all participating countries. The change will take place during a 7-year transition, during which time patent owners have an option to elect which system will apply to their patent rights.
