Manav Das works closely with his clients to draft and prosecute patents globally. He has experience counseling research universities, small businesses and start-ups, while also preparing and prosecuting patent applications for leading global companies in the software, banking, telecommunications, and insurance industries.

With a background in mathematics and experience working in academia and in-house legal departments, Dr. Das offers clients a valuable perspective – combining detailed technological knowledge with legal and business acumen to create effective intellectual property strategies.

Dr. Das is named an inventor on three U.S. patents for various software technologies, and has drafted and prosecuted patents for a wide range of technologies, including:

Prior to joining MBHB, Dr. Das was Of Counsel at Banner & Witcoff (Chicago) and a patent attorney at Middleton Reutlinger (Louisville). He also served as a senior corporate counsel at Micro Focus, and a patent portfolio manager at Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company, and Hewlett-Packard Company. Additionally, he was a tenured faculty in mathematics at the University of Louisville, and a visitor at various research institutions in the U.S. and internationally.

Dr. Das serves as vice chair of the U.S. Patent Office Practice Committee of the Intellectual Property Owners Association, and as an advisory board member for the Illinois Patent Hub. Passionate about mathematics, Dr. Das is still involved as a contributing editor for Real Analysis Exchange, a mathematics journal from Michigan State University Press.

• Supported several start-up companies – including healthcare platforms and AR/VR consumer applications – with intellectual property counseling. Some of the startups are related to golf caps, boating accessories, tomato cages, medical shoes, electronic security devices for retail merchandise, and wind turbines.
• Performed opinion work for several clients, including analyses of freedom to operate, validity, non-infringement, and patentability.
• While at HPE/Micro Focus, developed and managed global patent portfolios for the Software and Analytics Lab, Big Data, and Enterprise Security, and supported the Networking portfolio.
• While at Micro Focus, led successful commercial negotiations with various global companies, and was responsible for managing several high-value commercial client partnerships, including Fortune 50 clients, especially with terms related to data privacy (GDPR), personal data (PII, PCI, PHI), intellectual property, compliance, software escrow provisions, open source, and indemnification.
• While in private practice, supported IP litigation, including all aspects of a patent litigation against five Fortune 500 companies. Past litigation experience also includes trade secret misappropriation, trademark and copyright infringement, and inter partes reviews.
• While in academia, served in various leadership positions, conducted research, gave invited talks, organized conferences, and taught mathematics at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including supervision of doctoral and master’s theses.
